It is recommended to order slightly over your requirements to allow for size discrepancies and trimming joints.
Similarly, if there are obstacles within the lawn area such as a shed, tree, pond, or steps, you still need the same quantity of artificial grass so do not need to take into consideration obstacles when measuring the area.
You will also need to take into consideration how much joining and adhesive material is needed and how many joints you will need. You should aim to cover the area with the minimum number of joins on the shortest lengths.
For square and rectangular-shaped lawns, calculate the number of square meters by simply multiplying the width by the length. (length) x (width) = total square meter.
For square and rectangular-shaped lawns, calculate the number of square meters by simply multiplying the width by the length. (length) x (width) = total square meter.
For round lawns, work out the diameter in metres and round up to the nearest even number for the width. This is due to roll widths being 2m or 4m. The length can use the accurate measurement of the diameter.Â
To calculate how many square metres of artificial grass is needed for angled or curved lawns, again, multiply the width and the widest point with the length at the longest point.
With L-shaped lawns, you should split the lawn into two sections. Multiply the width by the length of one section, the width and length of the second section, and add these together to generate the total square metres required.
There are multiple ways to install artificial grass, so make sure you have measured the best way for your project. If you have any questions or problems get in touch and we will be more than happy to help you measure how much artificial grass product you will need.
Artificial grass, lawn, astroturf or whatever you may call it isn’t always simple to install, which is why we recommend using a professional installer to lay artificial grass for you. However, if you find yourself scratching your head and thinking “how do I lay artificial grass?”, then this is the guide for you.Â
For more in depth fitting instructions, see our full DIY guides.
Before starting your project, plan out the area to be covered. Ensure that cables and water pipes are below the digging depth.
Remove the turf to a depth of 2″ using a turf cutter or spade and remove any large stones, bricks, or other obstructions. Lay down a type 1 stone base.
If there are no perimeters for the product to butt up against, install an edging system. We recommend securing your artificial turf using VertEdge. Knock the edging into the soil with a hammer and a piece of wood, leaving around 3cm exposed.
Apply around 6mm of granite dust. Use a piece of timber to drag the sand or dust across the application area to provide a smooth surface. If using sand, the depth should not be more than 20mm. Use hardcore to level out larger imperfections (i.e. over 20mm) before applying sand.
Once the base is compacted, apply a weed membrane to the area and secure it in position with 6″ galvanised steel nails every 0.75m around the perimeter. This will prevent weed growth whilst allowing water drainage.
Trim off any waste membrane from the edges. If any joining is needed, overlap the edges then attach them with gaffer tape.
Unroll the artificial turf over the area, being careful to not move the weed membrane. Having the pile direction running toward the house will give the best look from the windows of the house.
Once positioned, trim the excess artificial grass. VertEdge gives you a useful edge to run your knife around. We recommend changing blades every 3-5 metres to ensure the blade stays sharp enough.
To finish, apply kiln sand to the turf. This can be done using a blower and stiff brush or a lawn fertiliser spreader. We recommend 6-8kg of sand per square metre of product. This step is vital to ensure the most natural-looking finish.
For the best results, we recommend brushing the pile before, during and after. This sand infill dressing should be done on a dry day and the same day as the lawn installation..
When installing artificial grass over 4m in width (for most products) you will need to join the turf to ensure a high-quality, long-lasting finish. In this DIY guide, you’ll learn how to join artificial grass in 7 simple steps:
Whilst avoiding the blades of grass, trim 20-30mm from each edge cutting in-between tufts. A good rule of thumb is to always cut in by at least 3 tufts.
Unroll the joint tape shiny-side down along the entire length of the join. It is important to not roll the artificial grass over yet and that you secure the tape down with nails or adhesive.
Fold one side of the turf onto the joint tape then slowly fold over the other side of the join. A gap of 2-3mm between the sections generally gives the best results.
Apply the joining adhesive with a mastic gun and a specialist jointing glue nozzle through the centre of these two sections. If you do not have a specialist nozzle, you can use a standard nozzle. Using a standard nozzle, you’ll want to apply a bead of glue under the edge of the first section of grass – followed by a second bead to the front edge to accommodate the second piece of grass.
Once you’ve joined your artificial turf, laying weighted planks along the join is a good idea to ensure an invisible joint. Allow 2-3 hours to dry and then sand infill your artificial lawn.
Watch the video below for more information on how to join artificial grass.
For your artificial grass installation, a regular cleaning program is always recommended to ensure the maximum life expectancy of your LazyLawn. As an outdoor product open to the elements, there is inevitably some periodic light maintenance work you should carry out to look after your lawn. Here are our 6 best aftercare tips for maintaining your artificial grass to keep your garden clean and presentable.
1. Regularly remove leaves and debris
2. Apply weed killer
3. Brushing
4. Remove pet waste
5. Avoid mirrors and other reflective surfaces
6. Avoid using BBQs and other heat sources directly on the lawn
The first step to cleaning and caring for your artificial grass is to regularly remove leaves and debris using a petrol leaf blower (for best results), a stiff brush, or a plastic rake. Additionally, to limit the number of leaves falling onto the lawn, regularly trim back hedges and overhanging trees.
If there is no transfer of dirt or soil, artificial grass is pretty much self-cleaning. However, if the grass needs cleaning, hosing it down using a light detergent and a stiff brush (or a mechanical brush for best results) is recommended.
If you have dogs or pets, it’s important to eradicate pet urine odours and mess to keep your lawn clean and fresh. You can use our specialist artificial grass cleaners PoopClenz and PeeClenz to help maintain your lawn.
Please be aware that outdoor mirrors, mirrored walls, reflective and shiny surfaces, and energy-efficient windows can have an adverse effect on our surfaces, and, as such, are not recommended to be used in any project where LazyLawn is laid, as any damage caused by such items will not be covered by any warranty.
Please be aware that barbeques and other items that generate heat should not be placed directly on the artificial lawn as they can burn the grass due to the intense heat generated from them. It is best practice to place BBQs on a patio.
We have had cases where clients have employed contractors to trim their trees who have then placed their motorised tools on the lawn, which has subsequently burnt the surface. Any damage caused by such items will not be covered by any warranty so please take care and advise any contractors in advance so they do not accidentally damage your synthetic turf.
It’s also a good idea to keep any magnifying glasses away from the kids on the lawn.
PoopClenz and PeeClenz are two of the best products on the market when it comes to cleaning up pet waste. PoopClenz and PeeClenz are designed to clean your artificial grass and eliminate odours. They’re also artificial grass friendly so you don’t have to worry about these products damaging your artificial grass.
Our product builder tool makes it easy to order products our artificial grass range.Â
